Clinical depression tends to overwhelm people with unhappiness, dispair and sadness. There are many symptoms of depression including problems with concentration, trouble making decisions, disturbed sleep patterns or sleeping too much, appetite or weight changes, fatigue, and irritability. Regardless of which emotions are the strongest, pleasure in daily activities is very hard to achieve. What used to be enjoyable seems bleak, at best, and these feelings may aggravate negative views about self and what lies ahead. Pessimism increases over problems before seeking treatment.
Depression Treatment
Self-help techniques are not right for everyone and many may prefer to seek a treatment approach to ending the devastating effects of depression. Depression is a highly treatable disorder and, as with many illnesses, the earlier treatment begins, the more effective it is and the greater the likelihood that recurrences can be prevented. The most common treatments include medication which is most effective in bringing about a full therapeutic effect on symptoms when taken as recommended. Although antidepressants are not habit–forming or addictive, abruptly ending an antidepressant can cause withdrawal symptoms or lead to a relapse.
